Around lunchtime I got a text from my friend Oak. Arrests were happening at Standing Rock. 23 water protectors were arrested in non-violent civil disobedience attempting to stop the development of the pipeline. Tonight they are being held WITHOUT BAIL. Please take a min to watch this video and then call the numbers listed below and demand the release of the 23 protectors who were arrested today.
Hearing about the arrests, I got on the phone after work and started texting folks to see who was coming out for the solidarity action happening at Oscar Grant Plaza tonight in Oakland. By the end of the night over 2,000 people had come out including a pretty large group of Pagans!
There were many prayers for the waters. “Mni Wiconi” are the words in Lakota for “Water is Life”. Elders at the Standing Rock have asked that we pray for the waters. And so I ask for your prayers for the waters and prayers for the water protectors in solidarity with Standing Rock. We all are born of water and we all need water to survive. This is a movement led by indigenous people and it’s a movement for us all to be involved with because we are all of water.
I arrived home with hope in my heart and checked out the latest from #nodaplsolidarity.org I was floored by some of the incredible actions that are being organized throughout the country to put pressure on stakeholders and stop this pipeline from being built! There are solidarity actions happening across the country all week. Check out this page to find an action near you. Can’t make it to an action? Here’s a lot of great actions you can take at home to support Standing Rock.
For those of you in the bay, it’s going down and we need your help. An incredible Ohlone sacred site is under threat of development. East Bay Regional Parks wants to build a 300 car parking lot that would cause irreparable damage to these sites. They are looking at two plans and both are opposed by Ohlone leaders. Please take a min and contact the districts Board of Directors to voice your opposition. This development can be stopped but not without all of our work. Want to take even more action? Please come out on Tuesday September 20th at 1pm to voice your opposition to the development at the next EBRP meeting.
